Charlie’s FreeWheels
Honouring the loss of a close friend by creating a community project in his name.
The group behind CHARLIE'S FREEWHEELS took the loss of a good friend and turned it into an amazing community project. When Charles Prinsep was hit and killed by a car during a cross Canada bike tour, his friends were inspired to start an initiative in Toronto's Regent Park neighborhood to honour his memory - and his passion for cycling. Charlie's FreeWheels runs a program where kids meet twice a week at a local bike shop to learn to build and maintain their own bicycles. Volunteers trained and engaged 11 kids over a course of seven weeks in the program's first season, including instruction on bike safety. These kids are not only learning bike mechanics, they are given an opportunity to interact with peers and positive role models, develop youth leadership skills and gain an understanding of sustainability.
