Joan Rogers: Hope Air
Volunteer pilots taking health care to new heights
Time spent as a volunteer at Princess Margaret Hospital showed JOAN ROGERS that one of the biggest challenges faced by many patients was the travel from their homes in remote areas to health care facilities in urban areas. Some families were traveling 20 hours by bus to reach treatment. Inspired to make change, Joan began arranging transportation for patients and their families in 1986 and provided 56 flights in the first year. The program continued to grow from there and in January of 2008, Hope Air announced it's 53,000th flight. With a roster of almost 100 volunteer pilots, Joan Rogers and Hope Air are providing an essential service to many Canadian families.
