Nina Aquino: fu-GEN Theatre
Creating a space in Canada's cultural landscape for Asian Canadian playwrights.
Fruitless and frustrating research for a Masters thesis on Asian-Canadian theatre pushed NINA AQUINO to create the fu-GEN theatre company. With a dynamic group of her peers, Nina created a space in the Canadian cultural landscape for Asian-Canadian voices to be heard. Local talent is fostered and mentored and playwrights are showcased at a yearly festival called "Potluck." fu-GEN has since launched 5 major productions involving over 100 people from many different communities. Nina's efforts have even been a catalyst for a two-book anthology on Asian-Canadian theatre - firmly planting the genre in the world of Canadian artforms.
