Sister Georgette: Sherbourne Health Bus

Taking health care to the streets

Well aware of the many challenges faced by the homeless on the streets of Toronto, the Sherbourne Health Centre helps to make life a little better with the SHERBOURNE HEALTH BUS. This mobile health centre makes regular stops at several community locations around the city where volunteer nurses provide on-the-spot care and educational services for people living on the street. If a patient has more involved needs, nurses on the Health Bus can also provide referrals to specialists and follow up care. The nurses serve hundreds of patrons every week, and with each visit they also distribute fresh socks and toiletries like toothpaste and shampoo - simple items that can make a big difference for someone in need. Volunteers like nurse SISTER GEORGETTE are the face of compassion and understanding, and a prime example of community involvement.
