By Guest Blogger: John Paul de Silva, Managing Director of Social Focus Consulting

John Paul de SilvaAfter being filmed for a Getinvolved.ca video in summer 2012, I eagerly awaited its television premiere on TVO. I absolutely love TVO and grew up watching educational and yet entertaining shows such as Polka Dot Door, Today’s Special, and Read All About It on the channel. To be associated with the channel, even in a small way, was an exciting proposition.

Knowing that my video would finally premiere on March 14, 2013, at 7:51 PM exactly, I got my equally, if not more, excited mom to get the camera ready. I wanted some pics for posterity to capture the moment of appearing on provincial-wide television. And there I was: my gigantic head appeared on an even bigger television set. Too cool for words! so I’m glad pics can now do the talking.

The whole Getinvolved.ca/TVO experience was exciting not only from a personal standpoint, but also from a business standpoint. The video told the story of my volunteerism but it also told how volunteering led to the founding of my company, Social Focus Consulting. By airing this video, we received tremendous exposure.

Social Focus Consulting

Further, the high quality production and airing on TVO lent an air of legitimacy to our mission. As a young organization, Social Focus Consulting is seeking to establish itself as the most innovative and youth-driven consultancy for non-profits in Canada. This video will help tell our story, in an effective way, to all the potential clients, partners, employees, and supporters out there.

John Paul de Silva is Managing Director of Social Focus Consulting, a youth-driven student consultancy helping nonprofits with innovative and affordable social media and marketing solutions. Visit HERE or contact him at JohnPaul@SocialFocusConsulting.ca.

When volunteers raise awareness, what does it look like? Can you define the amount of awareness that was raised? Can you see it? Touch it? Is it a nice tactile and tangible outcome that you can hold in the palm of your hand? For most of us, no. It feels like a vague concept.
