Rachael Smith: Yard Sale for the Cure

Cancer survivor gives back with Yard Sale for the Cure

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, RACHAEL SMITH's treatment ran the gamut of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. With her disease in remission Rachael and her family are eternally grateful for all of the support they received along the way. To show their gratitude, Rachael and her husband Andrew created Yard Sale for the Cure. It's an annual event where households across the country donate the proceeds of their yard sale to local cancer research and treatment initiatives. In four years, Yard Sale has raised more than $150,000, all going directly to cancer research. Rachael used her skills as a marketer to land realtor giant Remax as the national sponsor and has companies lining up to help. For Rachael, "cancer" means "community" and she continues to involve her community by creatively using clutter to fight cancer.
